How to choose a sunscreen

sunscreen

I read the Environmental Working Group’s Shopper’s Guide to Safer Sunscreens and I found some interesting facts to share with you. Read the labels and avoid: oxybenzone, vitamin A, products with added insect repellant. Also avoid sprays, powders and those with an SPF above 50. An SPF higher than 50 can tempt you to stay in the sun too long, suppressing sunburn but not skin damage. For everyday use, stick to an SPF of 15-50 and reapply often. Vitamin A is great for you when eaten but, skin coated with vitamin A laced creams can develop tumors and lesions sooner. … MORE…

Salt is good for your skin

salt chamber

I’ve always believed in the healing power of salt. Growing up in the Virgin Islands, I remember how restorative a swim in the ocean would be for my body and I credited it mostly to the natural sea salt. If I felt a cold coming on, or my muscles were a little sore from dancing, or even to help clear up my acne, my grandmother would recommend a little dip in the ocean. I wasn’t surprised to read in the March/April 2011 issue of ASCP Skin Deep magazine that salt applied to our bodies externally is really good for us. … MORE…

Getting ready for first photo shoot

photo_shoot

Here are the behind the scenes photos that were taken of me before Niki Malek came over to do a photo shoot for HandMade Body Care. This was HandMade Body Care’s first photo shoot and I was happy to welcome Niki into my home/studio where she snapped shots of me making a batch of lip balm. As soon as I get the link to the photos I’ll post it for you. I can’t wait to see how the shoot captured the process. I wanted to make sure the shoot was as natural and realistic as possible. Ann Roth Shoes

Yesterday on one of my walks through the city, looking for hidden gems, I stumbled upon the Paisley Umbrella. What a neat and cute showroom. From wedding gowns, to cakes, to invitations, to jewelry, to shoes… everything for the modern bride-to-be can be found under one umbrella at this quaint Buckhead boutique. I’m not exactly a bride-to-be, but I love little stores like this and I discovered Ann Roth Shoes, her designs are simply gorgeous and she offers a lot more than just wedding shoes. Take a look at a few of my favorites. From the Ingenue Collection this is … MORE…

My thoughts on Friendship

friendship

Recently a friend of mine and I have been discussing what it means to be a friend, what friends are for, what you can expect from a friend and so on. I welcome your thoughts on this subject. I believe that not all friends are created equally. I have a friend that I’ve known since I was six years old, even though I don’t see her that often (perhaps once every other year or so) I still consider her one of my best friends. Sometimes friends look through different lenses at the same friendship and like a relationship that can … MORE…

My Favorite Flowers

hibiscus

The saying has always been that “April showers bring May flowers”, but with the change of the earth’s climate we are finding that the flowers are coming sooner. Flowers that are having to bloom a month earlier than expected are producing more pollen than necessary. For allergy sufferers this has got to be one of the hardest seasons to get through. For those of us not affected by pollen, we can simply appreciate the beauty of the blossoms all around us. Here are a few of my favorite flowers: As a child, I remember having hibiscus trees in the yard … MORE…

Benefits of Steaming

I’ve always enjoyed sitting in a steam room. Sometimes I do it before a facial or massage or after a workout. I was happy to find out that this enjoyable little escape is actually good for me. The most important thing that a steam room does for us is to promote sweating. We try so hard in our everyday lives not to sweat (by using air-conditioners, antiperspirant, limiting our movement) that it’s nice to just be able to sit in a room and sweat like a pig… that’s a joke because pigs actually don’t sweat. Why is sweating so important? … MORE…

My Etsy Shop

Today, I’ve been busy working on banners and avatars for my new shop on the web. To take a look at it, visit the link below. My New Etsy Shop The Sample Lounge invited me to be one of their featured natural care product lines! I recently met the owner of the lounge and thought highly of her concept, now I’m proud to be one of her beauty partners. I guess 4/4 made me want to kick it in high gear… because today I’ve decided to give my blog a complete overhaul. I’ll be changing the theme and entire layout … MORE…
